A necklace, a ring, a child...There is always a price one is willing to pay.

Spin A Fairytale Retelling Spindlewind Series Volume 1 Genevieve Raas 9781540836854 Books

I will be upfront and say I do not like retelling of fairy-tales. For me that is a personal preference and I just don't find myself interested in them. It is a booming genre lately and the selections get overwhelming. I also feel like I'm playing Russian roulette with this type of book because there are so many out there that are just botched, butchered or down right disastrous. Some get too raunchy and become too cliche and that just doesn't suit me. I like a good, pull me in, unique and original work and this genre is hard to get right.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I actually had to ask around about it because I was worried I wasn't going to like it. I thought for sure this was going to be another one of those books that wanted to fit in with the new fad and try to be the next fifty shades of gray, which i try very hard to avoid anything that is too raunchy and sexual. Its not my cup of tea. I also worried that it would be one of those books I had to force myself to finish because I had that nervous fear that this book would fall into the generalized category of this genre. Its hard to find a book like this in this specific genre that actually outshines the others. It was beautifully written and the story telling was captivating. It gave a whole new meaning to the genre than what I had expected. Its a wonderful read and its a diamond in the rough. Don't let this one pass you by. It took me by surprise so much that I wanted to rethink my decision to give this genre another chance, that maybe somewhere out there are more stories that outshine the bad reputation that shadows this fad.

The creative world building in this story was fantastic. It gave such create perspective to an old story that I never imagined. The author does a wonderful job bringing this story to life. It jumps off the pages and comes to life before your eyes, blowing your mind with the imaginative creative and vivid details. I recommend this read to anyone who loves fairy-tales. The author does a good job writing in a smooth and fluent way that makes you turn page after page without realizing it. you get sucked right in and she doesn't let you go until the very last page. And better yet, there is a second book!

Spin A Fairytale Retelling Spindlewind Series Volume 1 Genevieve Raas 9781540836854 Books Reviews

I know there’s an eternal debate on whether to include prologues in book, but in this book, it’s done RIGHT. It was intriguing, twisted, and made me smile. In the narrative itself, the back and forth between Rumpelstiltskin and Laila was well-marked and easy to follow. The story itself was full of manipulative action, and I found myself pulling for Rump. The trials and tribulations from the tale forge Laila into a stronger woman, someone who is willing to do what she needs to do in order to prevail. It had a lovely twist in the end, and I understand that it’s part of a series, so the cliffhanger didn’t annoy me too much. Occasionally the melodrama got a bit heavy, but it mostly worked with the style.

The Rump side of the narrative seemed a bit distant because of the reminiscent quality of the tale. I would have liked a bit more now-action in his point of view, to better know his character. I kept comparing him to Mr. Gold from Once Upon a Time (a good thing, he’s a favorite!) so I wanted more meat to his story. Without that internal connection, I wasn’t quite sold on the romantic storyline. I do like one of the ending lines about those who are consumed by the past being easy to manipulate. That rings perfectly true in any world, in any society.
.
A fairy tale for the brave of heart. What an intense story. This is based off the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale but the author weaves a much deeper tale of betrayal, revenge and intrigue that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. Rumplestiltskin was born a nobleman but lost his family and title to a mad king who murdered his entire family as he watched. He was a mere child when it happened, but the autrocity marked him forever with hatred, despair and a deep-seated need for revenge. Fate in a human form steps in to help him with his dearest desire, which is to kill the king who murdered his family. Fate gives him magical powers and encourages him to use them to obtain his goal. Everything he does is self serving and manipulative to gain him what he desires most--the demise of the king. He believes he's found the path to the king's destruction when he sets up a miller's daughter to be a pawn in his plot. Laila has a drunken father who claims she can spin straw into gold. This claim reaches the king's ear and he has the girl brought to him. He tells her unless she can do this outrageous deed he will behead her, then tosses her into a dungeon with a bunch of straw and a spinning wheel. Rumplestiltskin shows up just in the nick of time to save her. He promises to give her what the king is demanding for a price--a necklace that belonged to her deceased mother. Desperate for her life she agrees and he spends the night spinning every last straw into gold using the magic fate bestowed upon him. But the greedy king demands more and Rumplestiltskin is only too happy to oblige. He bends Laila to his will causing her to desire the king's demise as well. Whether it is Rumplestiltskin's will or her own, she transforms from the quaking girl fearful of loosing her head into a woman who will do anything to survive. She tells the king that if he wants more gold from her he must make her his queen. The king unwilling to kill the goose that lays his golden eggs agrees. Then Rumplestiltskin forces Laila to make an unholy pact to pacify the king once last time and to give her what she most desires, life itself and a life of luxury. She agrees to give Rumplestiltskin her firstborn. But Laila and Rumplestiltskin's meeting in the king's dungeon aren't just fraught with mutual black passions. Real passion blooms between them, but both fight and deny it. As a reader of romance I wanted to see these two find a way to each find happily ever afters. Didn't happen. This is a book with a cliffhanger because it is part of a series. I would read more from this author.
